77 GHz waveform generator with multiple frequency shift keying modulation for multi-target detection automotive radar applications
Since the late 1990s, radar applications have been spreading far beyond military applications, especially in automotive radars. Automotive applications such as adaptive cruise control, lane change assistance and so on make the driving task more comfortable and safer. Detecting all targets in the observation area is the basic requirement of automotive radar applications. In addition, the ranges and radial velocities of the targets must be unambiguously solved simultaneously, with high accuracy and resolution. Two well-known modulation waves, linear frequency modulated continuous wave (LFMCW) and frequency shift keying (FSK), can fulfil the requirements of automotive applications, but they have limitations in multiple target cases. Due to this reason, the car needs multiple radars to detect targets. Thus, the cost can be increased significantly. The combination of LFMCW and FSK, called MFSK, is proposed to solve target parameters in multi-target case. However, this waveform exhibits a linear frequency increase but each step is FSK modulation. In this work, the hardware to generate this waveform is proposed.
