ECE Colloquium: Jong-Moo Lee(ETRI) "Silicon Photonics for compact and low power communication"

Abstract:
Silicon photonics is now becoming a competitive technology in the field of optical communications mainly due to its capability for high-density photonic integration while being compatible with complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS). Optical communication modules have been commercialized by several companies including Intel.
In this talk, I will introduce the recent progress of leading groups in the silicon photonics technology and also discuss the research results of ETRI for the silicon photonics technology.
Bio:
Jong-Moo Lee received the B.S. degree from Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea, in 1991, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees for a femtosecond fiber laser from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Daejeon, South Korea, in 1993 and 1997, respectively. He joined the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Daejeon, in 2001 after his industrial experiences with LG IS, Co., Ltd., and EO Technics, Co., Ltd., in sequence. In ETRI, his main research activity has been on planar waveguide devices for optical communication such as arrayed waveguide gratings, optical transceivers, surface plasmonic waveguides, and silicon photonic devices.
