In recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of semiconductor circuit designs, Mr. Kim has been selected as a recipient of the 2021 IEEE ISSCC Silkroad Award. This award has been presented to Mr. Kim for his recently submitted paper, “A 48×40 13.5-mm Depth Resolution Flash LiDAR Sensor with In-pixel Zoom Histogramming Time-to-Digital Converter.”
Under supervision of Professor Seong-Jin Kim (Department of Electrical Engineering), Mr. Kim proposed a novel approach for improving the accuracy of 3D LiDAR image sensor systems. There are various types of sensors, capable of obtaining the distance information for certain space. Out of that, the LiDAR sensor measures the distance between objects by hitting the target with a laser and analysing the reflected light. The problem, however, is that such method requires a significant amount of data processing. In their research, Mr. Kim has proposed a novel design that could simplify data processing, thereby reducing the raw content data by as much as 1,000 times.
Known as the “Olympic in the field of semiconductor circuit designs,” the International Solid-State Circuits Conference is the foremost global forum for presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and systems-on-a-chip. Every year, ISSCC brings together an incredible range of talented researchers in academia and industry from all over the world to exchange ideas and present results of ongoing research in the most state-of-the-art areas of solid-state circuits and systems-on-a-chip.
The Silkroad Award Program of the ISSCC intends to promote design of integrated circuits and systems at a quality level appropriate for submission to ISSCC 2021. It is particularly intended for students from universities within IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific region). This achievement is especially meaningful for Mr. Kim in that not only his paper has been accepted for presentation in the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), but it has also been selected for the 2021 IEEE ISSCC Silkroad Award.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the 2021 ISSCC will be conducted in a full virtual format from February 13 to 22, 2020. A total of 580 articles have been submitted, yet only 195 have been accepted to the ISSCC 2021.
