Professor Hyoil Kim’s joint work with two UCSD professors, Xinyu Zhang and Sujit Dey, has been presented at ACM MobiCom 2020 (Sep. 21-25), one of the most prestigious international conferences in the field of mobile computing and networking (acceptance rate: 16%).  The paper proposed X-Array, an APA (array of phased arrays) based mmWave architecture to approximate WiFi-like omni-directional coverage.  The work has a significant impact on the emerging applications like untethered VR, 5G NR, and C-V2X, since the proposed architecture helps overcome the limitations of mmWave, e.g., beam management overhead and limited field-of-view (FoV).
