Abstract:

A distinctive feature of HCI is its concern with how and why people use interactive computer systems. This matters because improved understandings of people's perceptual, cognitive and social abilities (and needs) can directly inform the design of novel systems, applications and features. This talk will illustrate the importance of understanding users through briefly introducing three very different case studies. The first deals with the design of observation-resistant password entry schemes while the second discusses the challenges of deploying persuasive technology to encourage users to conserve energy. The final example attempts to answer the question of why we spend so much time on social media sites. The take-away message from the talk is that people are complex and worthy of study – the short history of computing is littered with the corpses of applications and companies who failed to take this into account.
