Abstract
In this talk, I will provide you both a big picture on how the 5G standardization activities are conducted in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and a detail on how the constellation rotation combined with frequency-domain spectrum shaping of a transmitted signal improves the performance of a cell-edge user. First, I will summarize what the 5G is, what the 3GPP is, and how the 3GPP prepares for a 5G proposal. A short history of the 3GPP will reveal you why this 3G-related organization is a key player on the 5G standardization. Then, I will move on to the 5G waveform issues and summarize what is decided and what is still under discussion. In particular, I will explain what the spectrum shaping technique is and how it reduces the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of a cell-edge user. I will show that constellation rotation combined with spectrum shaping is a very promising technique when the angle of rotation and the shaping vector are cleverly optimized.
Short Bio
Joon Ho Cho received the B.S. degree (summa cum laude) in electrical engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 1995 and the M.S.E.E. and Ph. D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1997 and 2001, respectively. From 2001 to 2004, he was with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as an Assistant Professor. Since July 2004, he has been with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pohang, Korea, where he is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research interests include wideband systems, multiuser communications, adaptive signal processing, channel measurement and modeling, and information theory. Dr. Cho served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. He served as the Director of the Leadership Center and the Vice President for Admissions and Student Affairs of POSTECH.
