ABSTRACT:
Haptics is the science and technology of creating and employing touch sensation in human-computer interaction (HCI). It has been a long research issue and is being revived with great attention since haptics can offer an additional aspect to state-of-the-art computing areas including HCI, VR (Virtual Reality), touchscreen-based mobile devices, and 3D environments. In this talk, I will start with a brief introduction of haptics and present an overview of existing haptic technologies including haptics in immersive environment, touchscreen hapitcs, and mid-air haptics. I will then discuss three haptic research projects that I have led and investigated: (i) a flat haptic keyboard, (ii) Touch3D – an interactive mobile platform that provides realistic viewing and touching experiences through glasses-free 3D visualization and content-based tactile feedback, and (iii) AirPiano – an enhanced music playing system to provide touchable experiences in HMD-based virtual reality with mid-air haptic feedback, to highlight the benefit of haptics in the next generation computing.
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Jin Ryong Kim received the BS and MS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea in 2001 and 2004, respectively, and the MS degree in Computer Science from Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA in 2010. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2014. He is currently a senior researcher at Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea. He has previously worked as research interns at various research institutes including Microsoft Research Asia (China), NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories (Japan), and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (Korea). His current research interests include haptics, HCI, and UI/UX, but more focused on creating novel interaction through haptic technology. His work has appeared in top haptics conferences such as IEEE World Haptics Conference, IEEE HAPTICS, and EuroHaptics. He is a member of IEEE and ACM.
