ECE doctoral student selected as “UNIST Best Research Award” at 2017 Commencement Ceremony

Min Woo Ryu, a doctoral student of Electrical Engineering, has been selected to receive “UNIST Best Research Award” at the 2017 UNIST Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, February 21.

UNIST Best Research Award, which is given to the distinguished doctoral graduate in order to encourage graduate students and to promote research and development activity, are awarded to 3 doctoral students among 29 candidates, 9 graduate schools.

Dr. Min Woo Ryu (Advisor: Prof. Kyung Rok Kim) joined School of Electrical and Computer Engineering as a graduate student at 2011, after then, he developed 4-mask gate-last NMOS process for the first time in UCRF nano-fabrication cleanroom by implementing full device fabrication process recipes (not just unit process). His successful device integration technology demonstration was really great and impactful to other research institute with fabrication facility such as SNU and KAIST at that time of the early UNIST Fab stage, since semiconductor nano-fab only can be renowned by demonstrating working device through the full device fabrication process.

Dr. Ryu also proved his ability of the synergistic collaboration with other experts by providing significant results in a big collaboration project with KERI, ETRI, and KFRI, and then, new UNIST-initiative research project can be launched based on his creative idea and efforts.

During his whole research period, there have been many valuable outputs and excellent performance from him: Quantitatively, 4 SCI papers (3 first author, 1 third author), 3 SCI-E papers (2 first author, 1 second author) and 14 International conference papers, and 3 domestic/international patents (2 registered, 1 applied). Qualitatively as well, his 2 first-authored SCI publications of IEEE Electron Device Letters and IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices have always been considered as the TOP journal (L1) in Electron Device Society. Moreover, his research is not only focusing on the top-journal publication but also on the system-level demonstration of world-first real-time Terahertz imaging based on world-best device performance. From this impactful research, he recently received Samsung HumanTech “Silver Prize” in Physical Devices. This is very extraordinary and excellent achievement.

At the ceremony, President Mooyoung Jung awarded 5 Doctoral degrees in School of Electrical and Computer Engineering to students graduating after the completion of the summer and winter semester.
